Spending even a year out of Formula 1 would be fatal for Mick Schumacher’s career.
That’s the view of motor racing legend Hans-Joachim Stuck, president of the German Motorsport Federation, who fears the only German driver on the grid will be ousted by Haas F1.
Indeed, Günther Steiner confirmed that in the context of the current transfer market, which has seen a rebound in Hungary and after, he had no reason to rush to confirm with Ferrari a 3rd year of contract for the German . What to gauge other options or simply put pressure on the Scuderia? In the meantime, Schumacher is not confirmed for 2023 and that worries Stuck.
« He has to hold on now, show his best side, as he has already done this year, to guarantee his place. The recovery will be important for him with three races in a row. But not driving in Formula 1 for a year would be fatal. »
Schumacher may indeed have to spend the entire 2023 season as Ferrari’s reserve driver, or lose Ferrari academy support altogether according to other darker rumours. Mattia Binotto would not have appreciated that he went to negotiate, with the help of Sebastian Vettel, a seat at Aston Martin F1. And there may be an opening on the side of Alpine F1 following the Piastri affair…
“If for some reason it doesn’t work out for him with another team, he’ll just have to try to stay with Haas for another year,” Stuck continues.
« If Mick can’t find another cockpit, I wouldn’t understand it from a Haas F1 point of view. Because they can’t have a better driver. But I’d be surprised if Mick couldn’t find a seat. He shows impeccable performance that all managers can see. He also has a great name. »
“A team looking for a young driver can’t do better than signing Mick Schumacher,” insists the former F1 driver.
Schumacher was told by Haas that there would be no contract talks over the summer break, but his uncle Ralf says that’s not so alarming.
« As a rule, August or September is when you look for drivers. If he has another opportunity to show up, that’s fine. But the main thing is that he has a decent cockpit in Formula 1. »
Michael Schumacher’s younger brother admits his nephew could find himself without a seat.
“There are Formula 2 drivers who push and also have money, like Felipe Drugovich for example.
